Toy Design: Concept to Product | July 11 to July 24, 2010
  • Learn from leading toy designers how to build working toy prototypes by turning your innovative ideas into actual toys.
  • Design, engineer, and build real toy working models.
  • Develop unique character design for action figures.
  • Learn to communicate visual concepts that help sell ideas.
  • Create and prepare conceptual sketches and diagrams.
  • Gain knowledge of toy design software.
  • Print your 3D models to 3D printers.
  • Understand the workflow of toy development and production.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions to expand creative ideas.
  • This workshop will culminate in a public exhibition of student work.

who should apply
Students with strong design skills and a desire learn are encouraged to apply. This workshop is for students with a background in character design, fine art, industrial design, 3D modeling, graphics arts, design and manufacturing, architecture, engineering, and/or sculpture.

how to apply
  1. Students interested in applying for this class must show examples of their design work. This can be sketches, photographs of sculpture, computer imagery, etc. Submit a portfolio on a CD/DVD with the completed application, or the application should contain a link to the student’s website or an FTP site.

  2. Send the materials listed in Step One with your completed Registration Form to the Summer Arts Registration Office by May 17, 2010.

Michael Andrews
Michael Andrews is an award-winning toy designer from Mattel, Inc. With a keen understanding of the global toy market, Mr. Andrews has created toy lines for Warner Bros., DC Comics, Amblin Entertainment, and Pixar Studios, just to mention a few. Known for applying innovative technology to his toy designs, he creates action figures that tell a story. In 2006, Mr. Andrews won the “Matty Award: Best Toy of the Year,” for his design work on Talking McQueen. Currently teaching at the Otis School of Design, he takes a practical approach to teaching and is able to convey his years of experience as a toy designer.


Brandon Giraldez
Brandon Giraldez is the Director of Toy Design at Jada Toys Inc. and president/founder of Beeline Creative Inc. He has been in the toy industry for the past ten years and has launched many exciting toys including, Battle Machines RC and Touch Tech Action Vehicles. A kid at heart, Mr. Giraldez has enjoyed inventing new toys for Disney, Nickelodeon, and Marvel, just to name a few. He has a great eye for design and illustration while understanding the latest trends and innovations in the toy design industry.

Klaus Elias Nielsen
Klaus Elias Nielsen is a Prototype Engineer in the Product, Marketing and Development Department at LEGO headquarters, which is located in Billund, Denmark. Since 1995, Mr. Nielsen has contributed his expertise in the development of new LEGO products and has invented and designed new elements for both Intellectual Properties and LEGO product lines such as: Disney's Winnie the Pooh, Thomas the Tank Engine, Bob the Builder, Cars, Indiana Jones, Exoforce, Atlantis and Duplo products. In recent years, Mr. Nielsen has primarily worked in front end development groups. He trained as a patent maker and has many years of experience working with both traditional, manual tools and techniques (modeling in clay, wood, artificial wood, plastic and foam), as well using both Rhinoceros and Unigraphics 3D modeling software programs.

Megan Rothrock
Megan Rothrock is a Freelance Designer living in Denmark, and is also an alumni of CSU Summer Arts. Working for The LEGO Company in 2008, she designed product models for the Creator department including: Fiery Legends, Family Home, and Highway Transport. She also helped with development work on the Emerald Night and Winter Toy Shop sets aimed at the LEGO collectors market. Currently she is a team lead for part of the development team of the LEGO Universe Massive Multiplayer Online Game. Megan is assisting to bridge the gap from building with physical LEGO bricks to building with virtual LEGO bricks and helping create one of The LEGO Company's most ambitious projects.

Mark Trageser
Nearly twenty years ago Mark Trageser stumbled into the world of toy design and has been hooked ever since. At Fisher Price he learned quality and play; followed by time at Mattel where he focused on creativity and entertainment (Harry Potter, Shrek II, Cars, and Monsters, Inc. to name a few). Brands he created like Formula Fuelers, MADnetics, have won awards from the toy industry and parents alike. More importantly, to an inventor, they’ve become childrens' beloved favorites and the subject of science fairs and "show and tell." In recent years, Mr. Trageser founded Kram-Co Inc., an independent inventing studio where he has placed toys with major toy companies (Knot Wud and Battletronics). He has won independent design competitions (Staples Invention Quest 2007) and has lectured internationally on innovation and toys.

Mark Stafford
Mark Stafford is a Toy Designer for The LEGO Company. Since 2006, he has designed sets for the LEGO Play-Themes department in project groups including: Exo-Force, Agents, Mars Mission, the best selling Power Miners, Space Police and the new Atlantis theme. As a member of the LEGO design team, Mark has helped in the development of several Play Theme concepts, become a model coach for other Designers, created several new LEGO elements and worked with the LEGO Design Lab to help define the future direction of the LEGO building system.
