Solo Performance: Writing, Performing and Touring a Solo Show | July 11 to July 24, 2010

Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Steppenwolf Classes West have been at the forefront of some of Summer Arts’ most successful workshops over the past ten years, but this year’s double-session workshop promises to be something truly special.
  • Teachers from Steppenwolf Classes West and Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s internationally acclaimed ensemble bring their unique ensemble-oriented training process to CSU Summer Arts.
  • Renowned for its dynamic ensemble approach to performance, Steppenwolf is also a birthplace for new play development, responsible for a host of influential new plays ranging from their landmark The Grapes of Wrath to the recent Pulitzer Prize-winning August: Osage County. This summer’s intensive includes course work exploring the ensemble’s role in new play development.
  • This ensemble-oriented intensive draws from three core courses of the Chicago School at Steppenwolf: Viewpoints, Improvisation for the Actor, and Ensemble Scene Study.
  • This ensemble intensive culminates in a public performance of student work.
This is a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Workshop participants, mentored by Steppenwolf’s community of world-class theatre artists, will experience an intense immersion into the ensemble rehearsal and performance process. Entrance into this extraordinary workshop will be highly competitive, so please get your applications in early. Past Summer Arts and Steppenwolf School students are encouraged to apply.

Master Teachers from Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Steppenwolf Classes West
In 2008, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts’ play August: Osage County won the Tony Award for Best Play. This remarkable production, like his recent Broadway hit Superior Donuts, was developed specifically for members of Steppenwolf Theatre Company of Chicago. Since its inception over 35 years ago, Steppenwolf has gained a worldwide reputation for its dynamic ensemble approach to performance. Your instructors will be master teachers from Steppenwolf Classes West who have worked firsthand on ensemble performance. They are truly the best in the business. Steppenwolf Classes West, founded in 2005 by Steppenwolf Ensemble Co-Founder Jeff Perry and veteran Ensemble member Tom Irwin, offers exclusive classes and workshops based in Los Angeles. The School at Steppenwolf (Chicago) was created in 1998 by members of Steppenwolf's ensemble and a group of guest teachers intimate with the theatre’s work.

This summer's teachers include - Alexandra Billings, David Razowsky, Eric Hunicutt, Rob Clare, Evelyn Case, Kim Rubinstein, Eric Simonson, Austin Pendleton, and Jeff Perry.
