Drawing and Painting in Florence | June 13 to July 3, 2010
  • Visit and study the greatest examples of Renaissance painting, drawing, and sculpture. Hear about these works from the point of view of contemporary figurative artists who are also recognized experts in the field. Guided lectures of all major museums, churches, and architectural monuments will occur on a daily basis.
  • Draw the human figure. Work with a professor from the Accademia di Belle Arti who is a specialist in Artistic Anatomy.
  • Sketch in the streets, piazzas, and museums of Florence with an artist who has lived in Florence for thirty years and knows every aspect of the city intimately.
  • Experience painting in egg tempera, and study with a world renowned expert in the practice and history of that traditional Renaissance technique.
  • Participate in a landscape painting class with an Italo-American artist who will give you the opportunity to work from subjects in Florence, Fiesole, and Settignano.
  • Discover the rich, fascinating lifestyle and food of contemporary Florence, the cultural epicenter of Italy.
  • This workshop will culminate with a public exhibition of student work.

who should apply
Artists, art students, and art historians who are interested in studying and learning how to draw and paint from direct observation of the figure, still life, and landscape are encouraged to apply. Typically in this course there is a mix of beginning, intermediate, and advanced students.

how to apply
  1. Submit ten (10) images of your work (either in slide or CD form). Examples of drawing and/or painting in any medium are acceptable. Also submit a brief (one paragraph) statement that addresses why you should be selected for the program, and a letter of recommendation from someone who is familiar with your work and maturity.

  2. Send the materials listed in Step One with your completed Registration Form to the Summer Arts Registration Office by March 1, 2010.

Andrea Granchi
Andrea Granchi is of one of the seven painting instructors at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. He has exhibited his multimedia work extensively in Italy and abroad, and has executed public commissions in fresco and stained glass. He is also a well-known and respected restorer of ancient and modern artwork.


Andrea Gennari
Italian painter Andrea Gennari was born in Florence, Italy and still resides there. He teaches artistic anatomy at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze. A pupil of Accademia professor Fernando Farulli, Mr. Gennari collaborated with Professor Farulli in various scenic productions for the Teatro Communale in Florence and the Teatro della Scala in Milan. Mr. Gennari's work has been exhibited at the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence (1968); The Biennali at the Palazzo della Permanente in Milan (1987, 1990), as well as at venues in Fossano (1996), Turin (1992); Hamamatsu, Japan (1993); and Florence 1994, 1998).

Marsha Steinberg
A painter and printmaker, Marsha Steinberg is a graduate of CSU Northridge and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy. She is presently Coordinator of the Studio Art Program at CSU International Programs in Florence and is a teacher at the Lorenzo di’ Medici School of Arts and Sciences in Florence. Ms. Steinberg has exhibited her work in Italy, the United States, and throughout Europe.


Travel for Drawing and Painting in Florence
CSU Summer Arts is NOT providing any group flights or travel reservations or recommendations for Drawing and Painting in Florence. It is up to each individual participant to make travel arrangements and pay for their own travel.

ALL participants MUST arrive in Florence by June 13, 2010. The first class meeting will be at the International Programs facility on Sunday, June 13, at 6:00 pm.

While you will be responsible for making your own travel arrangements, you will need to provide CSU Summer Arts with your travel information.

The California State University International Programs office often recommends the travel agency Travel Cuts for student travel. You may want to check to see if Travel Cuts can offer you a competitive airfare rate: www.travelcuts.com, or 800-467-5032.

Lodging for Drawing and Painting in Florence

Please download the Drawing and Painting in Florence Housing Reservation Form HERE.

There are three housing options available for Drawing and Painting in Florence:
  1. Make your reservation and pay for your lodging through CSU Summer Arts for a four-person room or a six-person room at the Plus Florence Hostel.
  2. Make your own reservation and payment arrangements at the Plus Florence Hostel for a two-person room or a three-person room.
  3. Make your own reservation and payment arrangements with any hotel or hostel you like in Florence. [We recommend the Hotel Meridiana (www.meridiana-hotel.it), the Hotel Ariston (www.hotelaristonfirenze.it), or the Hotel Rita Major (www.hotelritamajor.it/English.htm).]
Student housing has been arranged through Summer Arts with the Plus Florence Hostel (www.plusflorence.com). Summer Arts has reserved several six-person rooms, and one four-person room. Each room will be single-gender, and each room has its own bathroom attached. Summer Arts has booked rooms at the Plus Florence Hostel beginning on June 12, and ending on July 3, 2010.

Rates for the Plus Florence Hostel are as follows:

Please note that there is only ONE four-person room available through Summer Arts at the Plus Florence Hostel. The majority of participants booking through Summer Arts will be housed in six-person rooms.

To reserve the four-person room or a six-person room at the Plus Florence Hostel, please complete the Drawing and Painting in Florence Housing Reservation Form.

The Plus Florence Hostel also has two-person and three-person rooms available at an additional cost, but participants wishing to stay in a two-person or three-person room at the hostel must make their own reservations and arrange payment on their own.

The Plus Florence Hostel is a 15-20 minute walk or a short bus ride from the International Programs facility.

Drawing and Painting in Florence Scholarships
80% of Summer Arts students receive some amount of scholarship assistance. Scholarship awards will range from $100 to $1100. Scholarship funds are not available for housing or travel costs.

To apply for scholarship assistance, please complete the Summer Arts Scholarship Application and send it WITH your financial backup AND your Registration Form to the Summer Arts registration office by March 1, 2010.

Other Important Information

Students will need to bring:
While Summer Arts will provide some materials, students will be expected to bring the following art supplies (details about the brand choices, sizes, and amounts of each material will be announced at a later time):
  • A complete set of watercolors in tubes or cake form
  • At least six watercolor, tempera brushes in various sizes
  • A block of watercolor paper
  • A container for transporting water
  • A watercolor palette for mixing paint
  • Rags or paper towels
  • Two sketch books
  • Drawing materials such as a selection of graphite drawing pencils, charcoal drawing pencils, charcoal sticks, conte crayons, erasers, etc.
Suggested additional items:
  • A small folding stool or a pad to sit on for landscape work
  • A small light portable easel
  • A sunhat
  • Sensible shoes for walking
Passport:
All participants will need a valid and current passport for travel to Italy. You will need to provide your passport number to CSU Summer Arts by June 1, 2010.

If you do not have a current passport, you are encouraged to apply for one immediately and to do a rush order. Because of demand and backlogs you may not get your passport in time if you choose to do it regular processing. United States citizens do not need a visa to enter Italy, however, citizens of other countries may. Contact the Summer Arts office for more information about passports and visas.
