  • Select audition material best suited to your voice and character type with advice and coaching from the leading authority on the subject in America today, Paul Gemignani.
  • Receive hands-on training in all aspects of musical theatre performance, including singing, dancing and acting.
  • Obtain guidance from Broadway’s most renowned musical director and a staff of distinguished teachers and industry professionals.
  • Develop a fully integrated set of audition/performance skills.
  • This workshop will culminate in a public presentation of student work.

Advanced university students and industry professionals who seek to refine their audition/performance skills and better equip themselves to fulfill the needs of musical theatre today are encouraged to apply.

  1. Complete the Audition Form, and include a headshot or recent photo and résumé.

  2. Send the materials listed in Step One with your completed Registration Form to the Summer Arts Registration Office by May 3, 2010.

Paul Gemignani
Paul Gemignani is the world-renowned musical director of more than 35 Broadway shows including Kiss Me Kate, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, the original productions of Sweeney Todd and Follies, and the recent productions of Assassins and Pacific Overtures, to name a few. In 2001, Mr. Gemignani received a Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Broadway theatre, and in 2006 he received an Emmy Award for “Best Musical Direction” for the PBS/Great Performances presentation of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific in concert from Carnegie Hall.


Mark Esposito
Mark Esposito’s talents as a choreographer/dancer/teacher are in constant demand. His choreographic work has been seen at numerous theatres on both coasts. As a performer he has appeared in over 16 Broadway and national tours, as well as television and commercials. He has taught at several universities and is on staff at Broadway Dance Center in New York, where he teaches an advanced musical theatre dance class.


Kurt Daw
Dean of the College of Creative Arts at San Francisco State University, Kurt Daw is a nationally recognized expert on acting. He has directed professionally for both theatre and opera companies. He holds particular expertise in directing Shakespeare. Dr. Daw is the author of two widely-adopted textbooks, Acting: Thought into Action (which looks at the cognitive processes that underlie creativity) and Acting Shakespeare and his Contemporaries, and with Julia Matthews, A Guide to Scenes and Monologues from Shakespeare and His Contemporaries, all published by Heinemann.


Inara Morgenstern
Inara Morgenstern is a distinguished pianist, popular accompanist, and teacher. Her solo and duo piano performances have championed unusual repertoire from classical and modern composers. As a teacher at San Francisco State University and in private studio, she offers a creative, supportive environment that encourages musicality and skills.

Hillary Hight Daw
Singer/actor/teacher Hillary Hight Daw has performed in musical theatre, opera, commercials, television and film. She was Professor of Voice at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta for over fifteen years, subsequently lived and worked as a performer in New York for five years and is currently Visiting Scholar in Voice at San Francisco State University.
