  • Act in a short film to be shot, directed, produced, and edited by students and professionals in collaboration with another Summer Arts workshop - The Short Film: From Inception and Story to Shooting the Script .

  • Develop your ability to not only relax in front of the camera, but also gain enough confidence to become friends with it, and ultimately increase your on-screen presence.

  • Work closely with and learn essential techniques from experienced, professional Los Angeles-based actors, casting directors, and directors.

  • Leave the course with a fully edited DVD copy of the film to show to agents and managers.

who should apply
The workshop is by audition or invitation only to thirty (30) select undergraduate and graduate level actors of the intermediate or advanced level. It is also open to ten (10) acting teachers who are interested in learning more about this work for their own classrooms.

how to apply
  1. Interested actors should fill out an online application, submit a picture and resume along with one letter of recommendation and audition for acceptance into the workshop. Audition must be either in person with Course Coordinator Hugh O'Gorman at the CSULB campus or by sending a digital copy (VHS or DVD) of two contrasting monologues - no longer than five (5) minutes total - with your application.

  2. Send the materials listed in Step One and your completed Registration Form to the Summer Arts Registration Office by Monday, May 19, 2008. The deadline has passed for this course

Deborah Barylski
Deborah Barylski
Won the Emmy Award for Comedy Television Casting in 2004 for casting the pilot and first season of Arrested Development. She also won the Casting Society of America's Artios Award for her work on Arrested Development, and was nominated six other times. She has cast the shows Home Improvement, Hackett, The War at Home, Still Standing, The Lot, Life with Bonnie, Just Shoot Me, Frank's Place, The Famous Teddy Z, Daddio, Buddies, and many others.

Philip MacKenzie
Philip Charles MacKenzie
Award winning actor and director. He is on the faculty at the Actors Center in New York, a visiting artist at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, and a visiting professor at UCLA and Cal State Long Beach. Mr. MacKenzie graduated with an MFA in acting from NYU and then began working as an actor in regional theatre, the New York stage, and in such films as Dog Day Afternoon. After moving to Los Angeles, he entered the world of television in all its forms; situation comedy and drama as well as variety. Never forgetting his theatrical roots, he performed at the Mark Taper Forum and other theatres in the LA area. He also continued to work on his craft, studying with two legends of the theatre and teaching world: Peggy Feury and Kim Stanley.

After appearing in many of the most popular shows on television such as Cheers, Family Ties, Bosom Buddies, Three's Company, Remington Steele, Newhart, St. Elsewhere, and as a regular cast member in nine pilots and several short-lived series, he landed his most important role, that of the flamboyantly gay character Donald Maltby on the groundbreaking and critically acclaimed comedy series Brothers for the Showtime Network. For his work on Brothers, he won the Cable Ace Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series as well as garnering four nominations.

Brothers afforded Mr. MacKenzie the opportunity to move into the directing world, receiving a Best Director nomination in the process. From there, he became a full time director in the half-hour genre directing such shows as Roseanne, Frasier, According to Jim, Dharma and Greg, Suddenly Susan, George Lopez, My Wife and Kids, Normal, Ohio, Just Shoot Me, Ink, Living in Captivity, and many others.

Anne Schilling
Anne Schilling
Assistant Professor, Voice and Speech, California State, Long Beach. She has taught voice, speech, dialects, and acting for a number of acting conservatories in the United States and in England, including Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music - Drama Division, Ohio University, Guildford School of Acting, Guildford College, and Millennium Dance 2000, in addition to private coaching. She continues to work as a professional actor, having performed in a variety of theatres from Seattle to New York, predominantly with Shakespeare companies - such as a two-year residency as a principle actor with the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, where she won a Cincinnati Entertainment Award for her role as Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. Publications include An Introduction to Coaching Ritualized Lamentation in Voice and Gender, 2007 and Searching for an International Shakespeare: Finding Space for Sounds in Shakespeare Around the Globe, 2005. Ms. Schilling received an MA "with distinction" in Voice Studies and a Central School of Speech and Drama and Performance Certificate from Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York.


Hugh O'Gorman
Hugh O'Gorman appears in the HBO mini-series John Adams, which airs in January 2008. Los Angeles theatrical productions include Johnny on the Spot at the Matrix Theatre, Lemonade at the Tamarind Theatre opposite Maxwell Caulfield and Heather Tom, and C.K. Dexter Haven in The Philadelphia Story at the Court Theatre. Other theatre credits include the Broadway production of Brian Friel's Translations ; and on Off-Broadway: The Yiddish Trojan Women (AJT), The Tempest (AEC) and Cloud 9 (Perry Street). As a founding member of New York City's Mint Theatre Company (2002 Drama Desk Award), Professor O'Gorman directed The Harvest , and appeared as Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew , Nick in The Time of Your Life , and the Doctor in Anton Chekhov: stories from my youth . He has worked in over a dozen regional theatres around the country, most notably the Seattle Repertory, Charlotte Rep, Huntington and Asolo theatres, and has spent seasons with the North Carolina, Montana and Idaho Shakespeare festivals. For four years he portrayed Jeff Singer on AMC's critically acclaimed, Emmy and CableAce award-winning show Remember WENN (SAG Award nomination). Other recent television credits include Father Tim on CBS' That's Life; and Burly in the mini-series The 10th Kingdom, US Attorney Chuck Rodman on Law & Order, and a guest turn on ER, all for NBC. For ABC he appeared on One Life to Live and All My Children. He played the leads in the feature films Upstate and Killers. Professor O'Gorman earned his BA from Cornell University, and his MFA in Acting from the University of Washington. (www.hughogorman.com)
